Do you ever get obsessed with a certain food and eat it every single day for weeks or even months? This is not a rhetorical question. I’m genuinely wondering if I’m crazy or not. I do this same thing with new music or TV shows on Netflix, so it may just be my personality to become obsessed with things. In this case, I’ve recently rediscovered my childhood love of cinnamon toast that my mom used to make for me. My new favorite afternoon snack is cinnamon toast with a cup of my favorite Earl Gray tea. I cannot get enough, even though I know that eating bread with butter and sugar on it everyday is not the healthiest thing in the world. Eventually, I’ll get tired of it and move on but I can tell I’m not anywhere near that point yet.
In the midst of the cinnamon toast obsession I was browsing through my grandmother’s recipe box again looking for inspiration. I don’t intend for all the recipes I post here from now on to be from her collection, but I have to …

Summer will never be my favorite season due to the 90 degree temperature and humidity around here, but I can’t deny that summer produce is my favorite. Since I joined a CSA my kitchen has been overflowing with peaches, nectarines, plums, watermelon, cherries, blackberries and blueberries. I had to admit defeat last week and freeze the rest of my berries and cherries since I knew we weren’t going to be able to use them up before they went bad. But that still left me with a bunch of peaches that needed to be used ASAP.
When I mentioned that on twitter I got lots of suggestions for making a cobbler or pie. A cobbler would definitely be my first choice except I had just made one the previous week: a blackberry cobbler that I posted here years ago. I remade the recipe since I wanted to update the sad looking photos that accompanied it. I highly recommend it, so please check it out if you’re looking for a great cobbler recipe!

I’ve been looking for this recipe forever. These Quaker granola bars are just about my favorite snack and I’ve been eating them my whole life. I like them because they are soft and chewy and not hard and tooth breaking like other granola bars I’ve tried. I also like the rice cereal in them because it makes them seem more like Rice Krispy treats with granola in them rather than boring old “healthy” granola bars. Healthy food isn’t inherently fun, Rice Krispy treats are always fun.

After my trip down to the Gulf Coast in February, I came home with a ton of Meyer Lemons from my aunt’s own tree. I’ve been steadily trying to use them up in muffins or any other lemon recipe I could find, but in the end I wound up making lemon curd. I hope everyone reading this has made lemon curd before and if not, get yourself some lemons so you can make it soon! The process is quick and simple and you’ll want to spoon some of that sweet-tart lemony goodness on everything from your morning toast, to your ice cream for dessert.
Since I had so many lemons to use up, my batch turned out to be almost 3 cups of curd, which unfortunately wasn’t going to keep forever. Who’s tired of turkey? I am, I am! I’ve eaten nothing but turkey and leftovers since Thursday and I’m ready for something new. The problem is that after preparing such a big meal last week, I am not in the mood to make anything complicated or time consuming. For times like this, I have my two old standbys: my mom’s spaghetti and chili. It was rainy and cold all day, so that translates to the perfect weather for some chili.
Now, I’ll be the first to tell you that this is not some mind-blowing recipe for chili. There are probably tons of more creative recipes out there. But I’ve been making this stuff forever and it tastes great and gets the job done. I like it because I can make it up in 10 minutes in the afternoon and let it simmer until dinner time or if I didn’t remember to make it early I can whip it up, cook for less than 30 minutes and it’s still good. So I’m still going at a normal pace for the BBA Challenge, but I’m behind on actually posting about it. I keep going back and forth about whether I even want to post about every single bread and that leads to more procrastination. But I think ultimately, I do want written and photographic evidence that I did in fact bake every single bread in this book, in order. I may do these combo posts for bread I have less to say about, but for instance, I have LOTS to say about the Ciabatta I did this week, so that’s going to be it’s own post (hopefully next week).

Late last week I finally got the island I ordered for my kitchen, which adds almost 4 glorious feet of counter space, so on Saturday I had an itch to break it in with some type of fun recipe that involved rolling out dough. Scanning through my cookbooks, I saw this recipe and it definitely fit the bill. I wound up modifying it to fit the ingredients I had in my pantry (mainly I substituted raisins for figs and added cinnamon and ginger), but it turned out really, really good.
And seriously, what’s not to love? It’s a giant cinnamon roll. Let me say that again: a cinnamon roll the size of a cake! It’s taken a lot of effort to eat this thing like an actual cake (ie you cut a small section from it) instead of just unrolling and eating the whole thing the way I usually eat cinnamon rolls.

Happy New Year, everyone! It’s time for my semi-annual I’m-going-to-get-in-shape-I-really-mean-it-this-time, so you’ll have to indulge me while I post some healthier recipes over the next few months. (Don’t worry, there will still be treats! I’d never give up dessert, I just find ones that aren’t as bad for you.) Honestly, I really overindulged on cheesecake and cookies last month, so I’m ready to get back to eating better and eating less processed food. I’ve been eating a piece of fruit for dessert every day this past week and it’s been perfection.
I’m always looking for easy things to have in the morning with my coffee and muffins are definitely my favorite. Unfortunately, a lot of muffin recipes are not that healthy. And of course, my favorite kinds of muffins have things like streusal on them which make them even worse for you. These muffins surprised me because they contain healthy, but not tasty, sounding things like whole wheat flour, flaxseed and oats and yet they are delicious.
